In this area overlooking Amanohashidate, one of the three most scenic spots in Japan, “Miyazu Matsuri” has been held regularly since the Edo Period.

Once a year, the god of Sannogu Hiyoshi Shrine, Miyazu`s patron shrine, is invited into the old castle town where processions of kagura, or Shinto dancing, drumming, and mikoshi, or portable shrine are held to pray for peace.
With the energetic cheering of the male participants, the dynamic mikoshi procession, the rhythmical sound of the drums, and the sometimes comical expressions of the lion dancing performance, it`s as if the charm of Japanese festival culture is condensed into this one event.  Spectators gather to watch the festival performances drawn by the sounds of the drums and flutes played at each street corner as if the ancient castle town has come back to life.

Also, on May 15th, the main day of the festival many shops open festival stands selling foods such as takoyaki (ball-shaped wheat batter cakes containing chopped octopus), mini castella sponge cake, candy apples etc. There are also games like lot drawing and gold fish scooping and stalls selling popular anime goods.
“Miyazu Matsuri” is a perfect opportunity to experience a traditional local festival and just the right amount of “Omatsuri Entertainment” which is a collection of Japanese subculture at the same time.
