Beyond millenium: Yatate no sugi (the great cedar an arrow stuck)

If you have a time, visit the west side of Otsuki-city. “Yatate no sugi” is waiting for you over a thousand years. The name of the great cedar comes from the anecdote of Sengoku-period: a samurai shot an arrow at the cedar to pray for victory in war about 500 years ago. After a long time, the cedar has been popular among travelers passing “Koshu-Kaidou Highway” as the place for rest and communication. Many famous Ukiyoe(a Japanese traditional picture) artists such as Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige 2nd. are motivated to draw it.
