Anazawa Tenjin Shrine: A Historical Heritage from the Heian Period

Anazawa Tenjin Shrine (Anazawa Tenjinsha) quietly stands in a corner of Inagi City, Kanagawa Prefecture, with origins tracing back to the Heian period. This shrine enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, and is deeply respected by many visitors, especially students and those pursuing academic achievements. Every year, they visit this place with profound reverence, praying for academic success and passing exams.
Known as the oldest historical and cultural heritage site in Inagi City, the shrine is located halfway up a small hill, maintaining its dignified presence over time. The building itself was rebuilt in 1694 during the Edo period, and its beautiful wooden structure evokes the scenery of ancient Japan for its visitors.
Every year, on a Sunday near August 25th, a lion dance, designated as a cultural property, is performed in the shrine's grounds. On this day, many tourists gather, captivated by the traditional dance. In contrast to the bustling crowd, there is a natural spring at the foot of the hill, which residents use daily. This pure water is cherished in many households for making tea.
