Overview and History of the Naruto Strait

The Naruto Strait is located between Shikoku (Tokushima Prefecture) and Honshu (Hyogo Prefecture), connecting Naruto City and Awaji Island.
This strait is known as one of the world's three major tidal currents, and it is especially famous for its "whirlpools."
The Naruto Strait, which is 1,340 meters wide between Magosaki in the northeast of Oge Island and Kadozaki in the southwest of Awaji Island, creates large whirlpools.
In June 1985, the Onaruto Bridge spanning the strait was opened, allowing more people to enjoy the whirlpools created by nature.

Whirlpools of the Naruto Strait

The whirlpools in the Naruto Strait are highly acclaimed both domestically and internationally for their power and beauty.
The tidal currents of the Seto Inland Sea and Kii Channel create extremely fast flows in the narrow Naruto Strait, due to the difference in tide levels (up to 1.5 meters).
This rapid water level difference generates whirlpools, with the largest reaching a diameter of 20 meters. This phenomenon is especially prominent during the spring and autumn high tides.

Sightseeing boats operate to observe the whirlpools up close. These boats approach the whirlpools, allowing passengers to experience their power and roaring sound.
The boat tours are scheduled according to the times of high and low tides. For details and reservations, please refer to the official site of the sightseeing boats. Uzushio Sightseeing Boat Official Website.

Additionally, the Onaruto Bridge is an excellent point for viewing the whirlpools from above. There are observation decks and walking paths, allowing you to enjoy the scenery of the strait.
Moreover, Naruto Park near the strait offers many spots to view the whirlpools in a natural setting. Especially during the high tides of spring and autumn, many tourists visit.
Be sure to experience the grandeur of the whirlpools in the Naruto Strait.

Access

The Naruto Strait is very conveniently accessible, about 30 minutes by car or bus from Tokushima City, and easily accessible from Awaji Island as well.
